What We Do

The J.L. Turner Legal Association (JLTLA) is dedicated to advancing Black legal excellence and uplifting our community. Our key initiatives include:

  • Supporting the Foundation Scholarship Committee, awarding thousands of dollars annually to deserving law students.

  • Mentoring African-American law students and pre-law students, fostering the next generation of legal leaders.

  • Hosting pro bono legal clinics and leading impactful volunteer efforts throughout the Dallas community.

  • Keeping our members informed of pressing legal issues through our Public Policy Committee.

  • Highlighting and promoting Black attorneys and legal professionals to the broader community.

  • Maintaining a searchable online directory of African-American attorneys in Dallas, accessible worldwide.

  • Serving as a key point of contact for legal organizations seeking to connect with Black attorneys in the region.

  • Fostering community among Black attorneys through events, networking, and meaningful connections.

  • Celebrating excellence at our signature annual event—the L.A. Bedford Awards Luncheon.

Membership FAQ

Who Qualifies for Membership? 

1. Attorneys licensed to practice law in any state within the United States may join JLTLA for $75 per year.

2. Law students or Paralegal Students currently enrolled in any law school or paralegal program in any state within the United States may join JLTLA for $10.

3. Paralegals and Legal Assistants can join JLTLA for $30 per year. 

️ The current fiscal year is November 1, 2025 – October 31, 2026.
