Scholarships
Each year, since 1982, the J.L. Turner Legal Association Foundation has awarded scholarships to minority law students that are from or attending law school in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Funds raised from the Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet are used to fund the scholarships.
There are two types of JLTLA Minority Law Student Scholarships, awarded on the basis of merit and financial need. Although JLTLA encourages academic excellence, the need-based scholarships focus on financial need and are not primarily academic scholarships. In selecting financial-need scholarship winners, we will consider an applicant’s need, disadvantaged circumstances, community involvement, and other factors, in addition to merely academic standing.
There are also three (3) JLTLA Merit Scholarships that are primarily academic scholarship awards. The Merit Scholarships available are as follows: The Barbara Jordan Scholarship, which is awarded to an outstanding female applicant; the Fred Finch Scholarship, which is awarded to an outstanding male applicant; and the Judge’s Scholarship, which may be awarded to either a male or female applicant who has excelled academically.
If you are a second or third year law student from the DFW Metroplex or a second or third year law student that attends law school in the DFW Metroplex, and are interested in applying for a need-based scholarship, a merit-based scholarship, or both, feel free to download a copy of the scholarship application below. Only one scholarship will be awarded per applicant. Applications must be received by September 28, 2007.
The 2007 scholarships will be presented at the J.L. Turner Legal Association’s 55th Anniversary Scholarship and Awards Banquet that will be held on Saturday November 17, 2007 at the Westin Park Central Hotel in Dallas, Texas.
